The founders of @sapwoodandsoot, Tayler and Dwayne, have backgrounds in environmental science and forestry. Tayler is the owner, designer, manual labourer, digitizer, and photographer behind Sapwood and Soot. Dwayne is the reviewer, assistant, and full-time supporter.
The idea for Sapwood and Soot came to us during the pandemic after our second child was born, and one of us had been laid-off. We had acquired a very large pile of firewood and wanted to make prints of the tree rings as wall art for our home. We started thinking of ideas of how to personalize the prints to give them more meaning to us, and the idea for Family Tree prints was born! After several rough manual and digital drafts, we arrived at our current products.
After we showed the family tree we made for our own family to our friends, their excitement and encouragement led us to start offering personalized family tree prints.
We also quickly realized that people were interested in the hand-pressed prints that were made as by-products when we were trying to create the perfect tree ring print for a family tree.
So we opened our store online and started offering both personalized family tree prints, and hand-pressed tree ring prints.
All hand-pressed prints are made by Tayler in small batches or on-demand. We use cross-sections of salvaged trees and expose the tree rings through a manual hands-on process of sanding and burning. We use high-quality printmaking ink and sustainably certified paper.
We currently have four different family tree designs available. These designs were derived from hand-pressed prints and are digital versions that can be personalized for your family.
We use salvaged wood and sustainably certified paper, and our sales allow us to plant trees along the way.
